Indian Railways uses a five-digit numbering system for passenger trains, implemented in 2010. A new nomenclature, "20XXX", is also used for superfast or premium trains. Train numbers starting with "12" or "22" also indicate superfast trains.

Systems like Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS) and Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) are being implemented to prevent accidents and ensure safe operations. 

Digital Interlocking:

Electronic interlocking systems are being installed to replace mechanical systems, improving safety and efficiency in signaling. 

Smart technologies:

Indian Railways is adopting smart technologies in various areas, including smart coaches, locomotives, yards, and signaling systems. 

AI and data analytics:

Artificial intelligence and data analytics are being used to optimize train operations, improve passenger comfort, and enhance maintenance. 

Electrification and renewable energy:

Indian Railways is actively pursuing electrification and renewable energy projects to reduce carbon emissions and improve sustainability.
